I wouldn’t normally post about this kind of thing, but Believe in Zero is a work campaign I have been really involved in over the past few months and I want to share it with my blog readers too. I know first hand the work that UNICEF is putting into working with the Government of South Africa and other partners to address the issue of violence against children in the country, and this campaign is not just about raising awareness – it is linked to real work that is looking at strengthening systems, making sure the right policies are in place, and bringing about sustainable change.
Violence against children is unbelievably high in South Africa – and there is no easy answer or quick solution. It really requires everyone to work together and an approach on all fronts – preventing abuse and violence, changing attitudes, providing support to victims, ensuring that perpetrators are dealt with.
I would like to encourage all of you to share your thoughts through the Facebook App and to become a fan to stay in contact about the work UNICEF does in South Africa and to get a better understanding of it. There is also an opportunity for one person based in SA to go on a field trip with UNICEF SA for a first-hand understanding.
