As I sit and write this I am fighting off an invasion of flying ants (South African will know they don’t look anything like ants) that are going mad as a result of the storm outside. My bags for Joburg are packed and I am sad to be saying goodbye to another weekend. Since this week is shaping up to be even busier than last I thought I should post this now, and not stress about blogging and speech writing tomorrow…
Even though Durban is technically still my home town, I struggle to keep track of the latest cool places to hang out. Yesterday I was invited to a reunion drinks for my old flat mate Alli at a place called Beach Bums in Westbrook, just north of Durban. It reminded me of some of the bar/clubs in Diani beach, Kenya, where the norm is to be shoeless and to enjoy your drinks with a view of the sea.
Beach Bums isn’t quite the Kenyan coast, but it was a lot of fun with a very relaxed vibe. I also enjoy being able to go somewhere where you don’t need to dress up and you don’t have to wear shoes (I hate wearing shoes).
The place is perfect for a chilled get together, and since it closes at 10 pm you know you’ll still be in bed at a decent time. There is also a backpackers there but I don’t think it’s for the feint-hearted.

The best thing about a bar on the beach is being able to sneak off an take photos, especially when there is a cool abandoned building nearby.
I really should have consulted you before going!! Next time I definitely will.
Well it was my first time at this place and actually I hardly ever go out in Durban so I am probably not the best guide 🙂 It was so amazing to be in that wonderful humidity though. Joburg is getting cold in the evenings and early mornings.
